Jala Neti is a yogic practice of cleansing ones sinuses. It has been done for thousands of years and can be considered the best preventive medicine to date.

Doctors report that sinus issues are 80% of visits from patients. Colds, influenza, alergies, etc. Flushing of the sinuses will make you feel better, breath better; and clean your sinuses of dust, bacteria, mucus and fungus.

Ok, I know this topic is gross, get over it. This will make you feel better and it is easy to do.

The idea is to tilt your head and pour a saline solution into one nostril, let it fill your sinus cavity and drain out the other nostril. For a million years humans have known that water up the nose equals drowning. Thats the hard part to get over.

To do this you need a Neti Pot. It's like a small tea pot with a flared spout to seal against your nostril. You can get a plastic one from walmart or walgreens or your favorite wal-big-box store. Or, you can get a fancy ceramic one.

The solution is is generally 9% non iodized sodium, sometime with a bit of sodium carbonate. The temperature needs to be as close to your body temp as possible(98.6°). This 9% saline and temp is like your normal body fluids and is less discomforting.

Ok, still with me? Not grossed out yet? Good, let's continue.

Put 8oz of the solution in your neti pot. Bend your head down toward a sink or do it in the shower. Tilt your head so one nostril is vertical to the other. Jam the neti pot spout up your upper nostril and pour the solution into your nose.

IMPORTANT: KEEP YOUR MOUTH OPEN AND BREATH THROUGH IT. RELAX AND BREATH EASY. THIS WILL KEEP THE STOPPER IN YOUR THROAT CLOSED AND WILL KEEP THE SALINE OUT OF YOUR THROAT, MOUTH AND WIND PIPE. BREATH OUT OF YOUR MOUTH. BREATH OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!!!!

Relax this is easy.

Once you start pouring the solution into your nose you will get a brief sensation of going swimming and getting water up your nose. You know that burning sensation? It only lasts for a second or to on your first couple times. After that you will be used to injecting liquid up your nose....

OK, still with me?

At first do 4oz through one side the visa versa.

This sounds kinda weird, but I can assure you you will feel better on all fronts.

I understand this to be true. It stands to reason that airborne viruses enter your body through your mouth and nose, more so than touching people. The hardcore yogis can use an advanced methods to flush their ears, eustatian tubes, sinuses, nose, mouth and throat, all at once. That's frickin' hardcore!

that is freakin' hardcore.....i would like to do the sinus thing myself but I'm a little chicken. I know if you don't get that saline mixture just right it will burn...not to mention I've never liked water up my nose!

I was nervous to do it the first time. The pot I bought came with 50 packets of solution mix. The water is right close to 98.6. There is an initial uncomfortable feeling that lasted about a half second, but true is you really don't feel anything.

I have a neti pot and while I do not use it all that frequently I do use it during the height of pollen and allergy season. I have some rough allergies and used to get one or two good sinus infections per year. Now I get maybe one every two years if I do not stay on top of it and use the neti pot often enough.

It is weird to get started with.

Well, I'm the proud owner of a neti pot and have used it twice already....not that big of a deal... although I don't think I quite have the hang of it yet....should it run out your ear Smile We'll see if it really helps my post nasal drip....I still feel the sensation of salty water in my sinuses and a little on the back of my throat....hopefully it will do it's magic and those sensations will stop...

I started using the squeeze bottle nati pot from the nasaflo nati company. Works really well for me! I certainly feel a whole lot better when I do it. The hard part is doing it every day! I need to work it into the routine.
